by #DebbieYap Do you know what does it take to be more precious than money? More Than A Book 书中有话 spent more than ten days just to accommodate Ching Fu’s busy schedule for completing this personal interview write-up. Throughout the whole interview process, I reckon that Ching Fu is a thoughtful gentleman, careful, systematic; someone who has his own mind and ambition. Fluent in four languages, Ching Fu is a travel writer with combination of both science and arts backgrounds. During his journey traveling around the world, he passed his times reading travel magazines on the planes, observed the pictures in the magazines about shooting angle of each picture. Patiently imitated and practiced his shooting skills, Ching Fu has eventually developed and mastered shooting technique just like other professional photographers. Although bus frequency in Malaysia is not high, while there are bus routes operating from villages to town areas, Ching Fu suggested that transportation system in Malaysia is still up to satisfactory. Buses in Malaysia are the only transport available in rural areas that carries village residents to schools in towns, furthermore, bus routes are across cities and towns, villages and tourist attractions. There are many heart-warming incidents encountered during Ching Fu’s bus journey in West Malaysia such as, meal treat from some strangers, some motorcyclists gave him a free ride to next destination. There was once where a group of secondary school students, seeing Ching Fu’s foot journey under hot sun, intercepted a passing motorcyclist and requested the motorcyclist a free ride to Ching Fu to the next destination. When being asked if ever worried response of My Journey By Bus would not be encouraging, Ching Fu answered in great faith that this has never been his worry at all. Firstly, he loves traveling by bus and he believes there are many others who love slow travel too. Secondly, returning to Malaysia after traveling around the world made him learnt that Malaysia, a place of which he was born and raised, has many lovely places where overseas do not have. He always believes that response from all parties would be overwhelming after the book is published. Nonetheless, there is a saying that goes, ‘road happiness is always strewn with setbacks’, likewise, process of Ching Fu writing the book was full of bumpy roads, too. He spent six months just to finish writing the book and another six months for copyediting, proofread, content accuracy check and map drawing. Ching Fu decided to complete typesetting on his own when he then found out typesetting fee could cost up to five figures, which is a very sizable amount to him. As he is now shouldering all works alone from end to end such as sales and marketing, developing new merchandise items, book restocking, exhibition planning and writing other MJBB series in other languages, he spent double the time to complete writing the second book ‘My Journey By Bus – East Coast Region’. Ching Fu, who was once an engineer in a construction company, said he won’t be returning to previous engineering career. To him, engineer position is always replaceable but there is no one advocating transportation system of Malaysia. He still sees himself as an engineer just that he is now working at a different place and different manner – no longer a white collar in office but an author who conveys buses (public transport system) and city planning (map) in words and pictures. Ching Fu, who owns a production house – FuFu Productions, informed More Than A Book that he is now busy with Japanese and Malay version of North Malaysia Region and will soon be publishing other series such as South Malaysia, Selangor, Sarawak and Sabah. Once accomplishing book series of bus journey in Malaysia, he will kick start bus journey in other countries and turn the journey experience in books. When being asked if ever thought of turning the journey into video clips, he acknowledged without hesitation as he is waiting for the right production team for collaboration. Tinyurl.com/GoodreadsMJBB No experience in publication and printing? It’s okay, I can learn! Seriously, we all start with zero. Every time we create something new, we go from zero to one, and then from one to two… Right? Immediately I spent few weeks doing research and figuring out everything while writing and doing the layout. When I test-printed MJBB 01 (Chinese version) for proofreading, humbly I asked the printer to get all my uncertainties explained.
Once the books were ready, I organised a book launch with a local classic bus. Including the pre-orders, I managed to sell more than 700 copies in the first week. I then sent request to every book shop and potential cafes that might help to carry MJBB. But how about the remaining 2000 copies? Think FuFu! Come out with a solution! Next, I tried to exhibit my journey by bus in Perak, Pulau Pinang, Perlis and Kedah. Unexpectedly, this exhibition in KL received encouraging responses, thus I did the same again in George Town. I took a step further by having “postcard colouring workshop” and “clay bus making workshop”, and launched few bus series’ merchandises. Finally within a year, I managed to earn enough money to publish English version in 2019. I repeated this formula and got MJBB 02 (Chinese version) published in 2020. Ops, COVID-19? Lockdown? Stay at home? Social distancing? Cannot proceed to exhibition, how to sell? Lucky book has no expiry date. No choice, everyone is effected. Erm, I adjusted my plans and focused on MJBB 01 (Japanese version) and MJBB 02 (English version) while expanding the stockist list and joining few book fairs and sharing sessions... I always tell myself “I can do it" and "I have a strong will, I know what I want." Five years has passed. I am still working hard to get closer to my goals. Well, without the supports from my family, helps from my friends, and readers who purchased MJBB and merchandises, I bet my goals would have not been possible… THANK YOU VERY MUCH! See you guys soon! Next : MJBB 02 (English version) Kembara sulung Daniel (Mexico) dan Sofia @sofiawmunch (Kopenhagen) ke Malaysia dan membeli “My Journey by Bus” @myjourneybybus . Selamat melancong! #danieldansofia #riwayat

Passion is not a matter of counting the years, but making the years count. Jul 2017: MJBB 01 (Chinese version) launched Dec 2018: 8TV Memories Puzzle shooting (Ep. 10) Sep 2019: MJBB 01 (English version) launched Oct 2020: MJBB 02 (Chinese version) launched Jun 2021: Non-Healthcare Volunteer, PPV KLCC Jun 2022: Sua Bicara at KL International Book Fair We may set out on our journey to success with an idea of how we want to get there, but sometimes we need to pivot along the way. Being okay with not knowing what your next step is and allowing yourself to simply be on the journey can be hard, but it indeed pays off and helps me learn more about myself in these five years. I don’t know anyone who has got to the top without hard work. That is the recipe. It will not always get me to the top, but getting me pretty near. Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible onto the visible. It can sometimes seem intimidating to set goals especially I’m a civil/traffic engineer or transport planner. I was upset when my plan of publishing the journeys by bus in the northern, east coast and southern regions in the peninsular Malaysia was rejected by two publishers. Although I totally had no idea how to publish a book, I insisted to figure out myself. Once I decided to self-publish the journeys, my decision truly illuminates the path as it brings a sense of direction, when the publications of MJBB 01 (both Chinese and English) and 02 (Chinese) achieved, confirm that I am on the right path. I will do my best to publish MJBB 02 (English version) and MJBB 01 (Japanese version) this year. Thank you everyone for purchasing MJBB and other merchandises. Your supports are much appreciated. Restocked.
